The Home Spa: Transforming a Standard Master Bath into a Private Retreat

For many homeowners in the Northwest Suburbs, the master bathroom is often the most overlooked room in the house. It’s functional, sure, but is it relaxing?

In 2026, we are seeing a shift in how families view this space. It’s no longer just a place to get ready for work; it is becoming a primary destination for decompressing after a long week.

Our recent bathroom remodeling project in Palatine perfectly illustrates this transition from “standard builder grade” to “luxury spa retreat.” Here is a tour of the features that make this space work.

1. The Centerpiece: A Freestanding Tub

Modern black freestanding soaking tub in a Palatine master bath, featuring black and white patterned floor tile, brushed gold tub filler, and wrap-around corner windows.

Nothing says “luxury” quite like a freestanding soaking tub. In this renovation, we moved away from the bulky, tiled-in Jacuzzi tubs of the 90s.

  • The Look: We chose a bold black finish for the tub exterior. This creates a stunning focal point against the light tile, grounding the space without making it feel small.

  • The Function: Paired with a floor-mounted gold tub filler, this setup isn’t just for looks; it offers a deeper, more comfortable soak than traditional drop-in tubs.

2. The Walk-In Shower Upgrade

Master bathroom layout in Palatine featuring a black freestanding tub, glass enclosed shower with black hardware, and a built-in quartz shower bench.

If you prefer a shower over a soak, the design needs to be equally impressive. We replaced the old fiberglass insert with a custom-tiled walk-in shower.

  • Glass Enclosure: By using frameless glass, we kept the sightlines open, making the entire bathroom feel larger and brighter.

  • Custom Niche: No more plastic bottles on the floor. We built a recessed niche with hexagonal tile accents to hold luxury shampoos and soaps, keeping the design clean and uncluttered.

3. Double Vanity & Smart Storage

Modern bathroom renovation in Palatine featuring a natural light oak double vanity, matte black arched mirrors, and geometric floor tile.

A “Spa” atmosphere disappears the moment the countertops are cluttered. That is why storage was a priority in this design.

  • Personal Space: The double vanity ensures that two people can get ready simultaneously without bumping elbows, a must-have for busy mornings.

  • The Finishes: We continued the mixed metals theme here, pairing black faucets with warm gold mirrors and lighting. This layering of textures adds warmth, ensuring the space feels inviting rather than sterile.
